Letter: Speak up with your vote

By Bruce R. Randall, VANCOUVER

To those voters who are troubled with both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and who may consider not voting in the November presidential elections — reconsider with a write-in vote.

Washington state and 42 others allow write-in votes. Here’s where the excluded and undecided voters have a voice. Sure, it’s doubtful a write-in candidate will get elected, but that’s not the intent; this is about expressing one’s disapproval with those on the ballot. Ignore the politically biased claims, contempt and coercion from those who argue that write-in votes are a waste of time.

No matter how ineffectual a write-in vote may seem, we live in a country where we do have choices and a voice. It’s our responsibility as committed American citizens to participate in our democratic way of life, and bailing out is not a patriotic option.

Finally, whether or not our vote helps put the next commander in chief in office, we owe it to ourselves and the nation to express our approval or disapproval with the course and direction of things, to be an active part of the national conversation.

In summary, don’t let others speak for you. Speak up, speak out and speak often.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
