The Portland Winterhawks capped a solid opening weekend in the Western Hockey League as they earned a 7-3 win over the Tri-City Americans on Sunday at the Moda Center.

Skyler McKenzie scored two goals, and Ty Kolle and Cody Glass each had two assists for Portland.

The Winterhawks scored the first three goals of the game, and Tri-City came back with the next two to cut the Portland lead to 3-2 at 11:10 in the second period.

Portland then scored two more before Tri-City was able to get on the board again, and Portland added two more, the last an empty netter.

Cole Kehler earned the win in net in his first appearance with the Hawks, stopping 26 of 29 shots.

The Hawks’ next game will be Friday when they host the Everett Silvertips at the Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. in a game where the team will be unveiling the arena’s new videoboard.
