Well, the speeding epidemic continues, but now with more vehicles, more chemicals, possibly more phoning and texting. The number of national road deaths has been around 35,000, but is forecasted to be about 38,000 this year.
What to do about it? One idea would be to take down all city and county speed limit signs, except in school zones, since they are so widely ignored anyway. Then, when we can, fund more traffic officers and put in more speed limit signs and enforce them vigorously. Self compliance is not working.
But one problem with this is too many speeders would take advantage of the crazy 50 mph assumption when a sign is not in the area.
So I guess we just have to accept the carnage reported almost daily in The Columbian and hope we are not a victim of some antsy driver in a big hurry to get to nowhere.
