The Portland Winterhawks advanced to the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs after their 4-2 victory over Prince George on Monday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Winterhawks won the series in six games, and face Kelowna in the WHL’s best-of-7 second-round series starting Friday in Kelowna after the Rockets eliminated Kamloops in six games. Game 1 is 7:05 p.m.

Three of Portland’s goals against the Cougars came in the second period, when it had a 22-6 advantage on shots on goal.

Two of its goals came in a 2-minute span by Colton Veloso and Ryan Hughes, and Alex Overhardt’s power-play goal at the 11:58 mark made it 3-0 Portland.

Prince George had both goals in the third period, and Keegan Iverson added an insurance goal at the 7:45 mark for the Winterhawks.
