PORTLAND — An Oregon police officer said he had warned a black teenager that carrying a fake gun might get him killed one day months before the teen was fatally shot by a fellow police officer.

Officer Gregory Adrian met Quanice Hayes, 17, during a car prowl months before his death, according to a Portland Police Department report obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive. The newspaper reported Wednesday that it obtained the document through a records request.

Adrian encountered Hayes Nov. 4 after he and a friend were accused of breaking into a car, the report states.

Officers found a fake gun in the teens’ belongings. Adrian said he and his partner Officer Stephanie Hudson both told the teens frankly that either of them would shoot the pair if the fake gun was pointed at them.

“I told both of them that the toy gun looked real and may get them killed if they carried it or pointed it at someone,” he wrote.

Hayes was shot three times by Officer Andrew Hearst on Feb. 9 after he reached toward his waistband as police were trying to arrest him, court records state. He was suspected as an armed robber who broke into a Portland home.
