Letter: Child care providers beware

The Freedom Foundation (formally Evergreen Freedom Foundation), is up to its old tricks again, this time campaigning to deny child care providers fair contract negotiations with the Department of Early Learning. Using their favorite strategy of misrepresentation and trickery they promote replacing our primary advocate, SEIU 925, with their own creation. Following the murky money maze of this purported association leads to the Koch brothers via Donors Capital Fund, Inc.

The newly formed Pacific Northwest “Child Care Association” proposal is dangerous for Washington’s child care providers and, therefore, they focus on convincing child care workers they will retain wage increases, health insurance and other benefits SEIU 925 negotiated. Yet they offer no concrete plans to deliver on their impossibly simplistic agenda.

This group hopes child care providers are too busy to research their false claims. But we know that union membership is already optional and all providers and families benefit from hard-fought gains made on their behalf.

An organization with ties to a group that regularly introduces legislation to eliminate collective bargaining rights cannot be trusted; their true stance on opposing worker rights remains. Washington child care providers cannot afford to risk gains SEIU 925 secured for their profession. Neither can Washington families.
