Letter: Live up to word, Herrera Beutler

Recently you published a letter praising Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler for voting against the Ryan/Trump repeal-and-replace health care act.

Her response as was reported in The Columbian on March 23: Herrera Beutler said she had concerns about how the House bill would impact children’s hospitals, the poor and the elderly. In Clark County, more than 58,000 children are enrolled in the state Medicaid plan, Apple Health.

Yet she voted to limit funding for Planned Parenthood in HJ Res 43 — Providing for Congressional Disapproval of the rule relating to compliance with Title X requirements.

What about the thousands of people in Clark County who depend on Planned Parenthood for health care? She is OK with them falling through the cracks?

We should remind her of Elizabeth Dunsker and Tom Tucker’s Feb. 22 letter, “Defend Planned Parenthood”: “Defunding Planned Parenthood is a dangerous political ploy that could devastate thousands of women, men and teens who need care the most. Our faiths encourage us to act out of love and to say with conviction, ‘We will defend Planned Parenthood.’ ”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
