Letter: Oppose Kalama methanol plant

Gov. Jay Inslee and all the Northwest should take note. The proposed Kalama refinery would be less than one-half mile from the Trojan nuclear fuel rod storage facility across the Columbia River. This plant would be the largest methanol plant in the U.S. and, if it exploded, would break windows up to six miles away. How safe are nuclear storage containers when subjected to such a shock wave?

This plant, proposed by Northwest Innovation Works, a shell corporation composed primarily of Chinese companies, plans to ship methanol, made from Canadian and American natural gas, to China. Increasing the use of natural gas by over 30 percent in Washington state, this plant would require an additional pipeline from Canada according to many, including David Taylor, a natural gas engineer with 45 years of experience in the Northwest and a Ridgefield City Council member. Washingtonians would pay for this in higher rates.

Richard DeBolt, a Washington state representative, and Northwest Innovation Works’ director of external relations, has supported $12 million from the Washington state budget, under freight and mobility funding, for a dock to be used by the Kalama methanol plant.

We’d pay in higher gas bills and in taxes for China to use our precious natural resources. To find out more, look up Kalama methanol plant.
