KENNEWICK — A metal manufacturer in Washington has agreed to pay $650,000 and make improvements to its wastewater treatment systems along the Columbia River to settle a lawsuit brought by a nonprofit organization.

The settlement between Sandvik Special Metals of Finley and Columbia Riverkeeper was filed Monday.

The nonprofit had filed its lawsuit over alleged violations of the Clean Water Act in 2015 after Sandvik reported that it discharged more ammonia into the river than its water pollution permit allowed.

The money approved in the settlement will fund various projects to improve water quality in the river and its tributaries.
