Letter: EpiPen increase is shameful

My concern for the increase of the EpiPen two-pack medication is not only for myself, but for others — like small children — who use this EpiPen for medical issues. I have been using the EpiPen for one year, for weekly allergy shots, and if I have a reaction to the dosage, I use this EpiPen, to alleviate the problem.

Last year, when I started getting allergy shots, I purchased the EpiPen from my Wal-Mart pharmacy for $35 for a one-year supply. The original price was $594.84 for a one-year supply. I was fortunate to have good prescription insurance so the $35 was not a hardship on me.

However, now I have to purchase a new EpiPen, as the prescription date is up, and I called my prescription insurance and was told that the same EpiPen would cost, for a 90-day supply, $530.49, or $2,121.96 for the year. If I purchase the prescription through Wal-Mart, a price for one year would be $375, not $35, as it was last year.

The pharmaceutical companies are making a large profit from our illnesses. Citizens should be able to afford the EpiPen and not have to decide whether or not they can purchase it, or go without and risk their health and life.
