Letter: Independent investigation needed

Do we need an independent commission to investigate the Trump-Russia relationship? I’m discouraged about the snail pace of the House and Senate investigations into members of the Trump team and possible collusion with Russia.

Several of President Trump’s advisors — Michael Flynn, Carter Page, Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, and Erik Prince, the brother of our secretary of education — were identified as having secret contacts to Russian officials and did not disclose them.

This is a serious matter that needs everyone’s attention. I’m concerned that the work of the bipartisan committees is progressing too slowly and much behind closed doors, so that people will lose interest, and the drive to get to the truth of the matter will weaken.

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, will take over as chairman of the investigation into Russian interference in our election. I doubt that he, who doesn’t acknowledge as a fact the Russian interference took place, will push the investigation forward.

Republicans may not be interested in finding out that Trump benefitted from the Russian hacking. We don’t know who might be targeted in the future; every American should see the importance of this issue.

We need an independent investigation, unhindered by political positions and accountable to the American people.

I’ve urged Rep. Herrera Beutler to join the call for independent investigations and I encourage my fellow citizens to do the same.
