Get ready for the upcoming Aug. 21 solar eclipse with Science on Tap: “The Sights, Safety, and Science of the Great American Eclipse.” This lecture by science writer Ethan Siegel will talk about what viewers can expect to see, how to stay safe while watching the eclipse, and the current and historical science that eclipses have inspired. Siegel, author of “Beyond the Galaxy,” writes the blog “Starts With a Bang,” and has an upcoming second book, “Treknology.” Science on Tap begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. The Port of Camas-Washougal will host a summer Riverside Concert featuring music by Johnny Limbo the Lugnuts, along with a beer garden and food vendors from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 12. There will be music by King Louie and LaRhonda Steele from 6 to 7 p.m. Then Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts embrace the early era of rock ‘n’ roll with familiar tunes at Marina Park, Port of Camas-Washougal, 24 S. The Northwest Corvette Association hosts its 33rd annual Endless Summer Cruise-In, open to all makes and models of cars and trucks, with goody bags and dash plaques for the first 100 cars. For August’s Second Sunday, the Cathlapotle Plankhouse will host Traditional Technologies Day, with demonstrations and hands-on activities demonstrating ancestral skills and indigenous knowledge. Visitors can learn about making a fire from scratch, creating a survival bracelet and more from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 13. Artists from from the Chinook Indian Nation and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde will showcase their work in the plankhouse, 28908 N.W. Main Ave., Ridgefield. The Vancouver Community Library will host Fandomania: Library Con, a mini fan convention for all ages, with a day of all things nerdy from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 19. There will be geek trivia, a cosplay contest and costume parade, retro gaming, a movie screening and a creators panel. Shoot 360 will host Hoops 360 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, offering divisions in for grades three to eight, high school and adult, along with a military and a public service division, with the elite division playing for a cash prize. The three-day event kicks off Friday night with a kids basketball camp and a block party Aug. 18. Three Point and Slam Dunk contests begin at noon Aug. 19. Team registration deadline is Aug. 10. The 20th annual Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival will feature internationally acclaimed and Grammy-winning jazz, blues and pop musicians along with local and regional bands. There will be numerous Northwest wines, work by fine artists and exhibitors for visitors to explore. Headline acts include Ruthie Foster, Shemekia Copeland, Grace Kelly, The Rippingtons, Ronnie Baker Brooks and John Mayall. The festival runs 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 25; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 26; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 27 in Esther Short Park, West Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver. The annual Camas Vintage and Art Faire will feature artists and more than 60 vendors with vintage, antique and upcycled items.
