PORTLAND — A Portland police dog helped officers track down a man suspected of using a double-bladed hatchet to steal a car, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded to the report of a carjacking in the 11100 block of Northeast Halsey Street at 11:58 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say John Lewis, 46, demanded the keys to a 1993 gray two-door Honda Civic while holding the victim at hatchet-point and then drove off.

After police found the abandoned car in the 1100 block of Northeast 109th Avenue, about a quarter mile from where it was stolen, a team of officers along with police dog Jager found Lewis and the hatchet in the bushes nearby, police said in a news release.

Lewis was booked into Multnomah County jail on allegations of first-degree robbery, first-degree attempted assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and a post-prison supervision violation related to an earlier conviction for second-degree burglary.
