Letter: Bad timing for Herrera Beutler

I’m flabbergasted to learn Rep. Herrera Beutler has scheduled a jobs fair for 9:30 a.m. to noon on Aug. 21, coinciding with one of the most exciting events of a lifetime — a solar eclipse!

Her office staff told me “it was scheduled a long time ago.” The first rule in event planning: Make sure there isn’t a competing event. I’m pretty sure this eclipse was planned long before her jobs fair.

Office staff wouldn’t confirm her attendance, but there has been a sustained outcry for a public appearance. Might she show up at the jobs fair knowing most of her constituents will be gazing upward?

Her last public appearance, a town hall in January, was held in spite of a predicted ice storm. Authorities advised staying off the roads. Ignoring public safety, she held the event. Today, authorities are once again warning of highway danger during the eclipse — “Stay off the roads if at all possible.” So much for caring about the people of the 3rd Congressional District.

When a town hall meeting is finally scheduled, I’m getting out my earthquake kit. She probably knows the “big one” is coming and the coast is clear!
