A woman awoke Thursday to find a strange man kneeling over her bed, then punched him in the face, and investigators are trying to track him down.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Running Springs Apartments, 14603 N.E. 20th Ave., for a report of a break-in.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Ellithorpe said a woman in one of the apartments woke up and found the man in her room around 5:15 a.m.

“She punched him in the face and he took off,” Ellithorpe said.

Deputies, with the help of a police dog, attempted to track down the intruder, but were unsuccessful.

The woman was unharmed, he said. It appeared the man snuck into the house through an open window. There was some indication he was inside the house for a time before running off, and money from the woman’s purse was missing, Ellithorpe said.

Ellithorpe described the intruder as a 6-foot-tall black man in his early 20s with a medium build, short hair, a broad nose and light facial hair. He was wearing a button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

The sheriff’s office is investigating, Ellithorpe said. He advised people can prop a stick in windowsills to keep them from sliding open too far.
