Amy Boget wants folks to get back to basics.

Boget, a county arts commissioner and incoming Yacolt town councilor, has launched a new arts market that’s aimed at keeping creativity and commerce local.

“If you want to go to a vendor event, you have to go all the way down to Vancouver or Camas or Washougal. I’m trying to bring it much closer to our rural area,” she said.

Yacolt’s first-ever Art in the Park market, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today, will feature 20-plus vendors showing off their handmade wares — including jewelry, bath and body products, housewares, clothing and woven fabrics, paintings and prints, and much more. “A lot of them are individual home crafters” who don’t have any formal organization or marketing, Boget said; a few are professional artists with studios and websites — among them Mune Studios of Hockinson, Do-Over Designs of Vancouver, Tara’s Specialty Soaps of Brush Prairie, and Miss American Dye and Red Star Barn, both of Battle Ground.

“This is a start-up year. We hope to make it an annual event,” Boget said.

Yacolt is approximately 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver. It’s a beautiful, scenic drive, with Moulton Falls Winery barely a mile to the south of Yacolt and Moulton Falls Regional Park another mile south of that; consider spending a day exploring the hills of north Clark County — and coming home with a bottle of wine and a handmade work of art.
