Letter: Be patient with school buses

School will be starting soon and yellow buses will be traveling the roads, driving the speed limit — no doubt infuriating a few drivers. Many are frustrated when buses come to a stop and activate red lights and the stop paddle. Some drivers will pass the bus after those red lights and stop paddles have been activated. But those red lights and stop paddles on a bus mean the same thing as a red traffic light or stop sign at an intersection: Stop!

Whether drivers are in a hurry, uninformed about rules or just inattentive, the consequences could be devastating. A driver could strike and kill a student crossing in front of a bus. That is someone’s child or grandchild. Could that child be yours next time? Is your impatience or inattention worth the risk? Could you live with a lifetime with that guilt?

There’s a hefty fine for drivers who pass bus that is stopped to pick up or drop off students. Can you afford it? Would it be prudent to leave a bit earlier in case you are behind a bus? Would it also be prudent to put your phone down and pay attention to your driving? Heed the signs. A child’s safety is the goal.
