Man, 63, turns himself in after hit-and-run death of 3-year-old child

Portland –A 63-year-old man turned himself into police in Gresham on Saturday night in connection with the death of a 3-year-old child in a hit-and-run crash.

Police said that Carlton Dean Burton, 63, was lodged in Multnomah County jail on suspicion of criminally negligent homicide, failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons and reckless driving.

Burton, who is being held in lieu of $42,500 bail, is suspected in the death of a 3-year-old child. The child was found unresponsive in the parking lot of the East Trail Park Apartments at 115 S.E. 162nd Ave. and died shortly thereafter.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot, police said.

The East County Vehicular Crimes Team is investigating the crash. No more details were released.
