PORTLAND — House Speaker Paul Ryan will be in Oregon on Wednesday, holding a roundtable policy discussion at one of Intel’s campuses in Hillsboro and a separate fundraiser for a pair of Republican House members.
The Intel visit is part of Ryan’s push to revamp the nation’s tax code, include a major cut to corporate taxes.
That’s been a top priority for Intel, which had been cultivating ties with President Donald Trump amid a push to revive domestic manufacturing.
Last week, though, Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich quit the president’s manufacturing council; he was one of several top CEOs to resign from advisory posts last week following the president’s equivocal remarks on racist violence in Virginia. Trump later disbanded two CEO panels outright.
At Intel, Ryan will take a business tour and hold a news]s conference afterward, to be streamed live on the speaker’s website. The event begins at 9 a.m. — it’s not clear when Ryan will make his public remarks.
Intel has 19,300 Oregon employees, more than any other business. It’s one of the nation’s largest domestic manufacturers, and its most advanced factories are at its Ronler Acres campus near Hillsboro Stadium.
Tech companies are popular destinations when politicians come to Oregon: President Barack Obama spoke at Intel’s Ronler Acres campus in 2011, and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi visited Portland startup Urban Airship in 2012.
Wednesday afternoon, Ryan will hold a fundraiser at the Waverly Country Club in Southeast Portland, according to Willamette Week.
Ryan will visit Everett on Thursday for an employee town hall at Boeing.
