Letter: Herrera Beutler should speak up

In the aftermath of Charlottesville, a nation in dire need of reflection, a country calling out for reconciliation, instead has been treated with contempt by President Donald Trump. Initially, he chose to blame both sides. Later, he rightly admonished white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the KKK. Yet 24 hours later, he flip-flopped back to blaming “some very bad people” amongst the counter-protesters.

Politicians across the spectrum have weighed in via social media and television interviews, expressing their sadness, frustration, and understanding of who was responsible for the turmoil in Virginia. Paul Ryan, John McCain, Marco Rubio, Ron Wyden, Mitt Romney, Kevin McCarthy, Cory Booker, John Kasich, Steve Scalise, Bernie Sanders and Barbara Comstock all agree there is no moral equivalence between neo-Nazis and those who oppose them.

Meanwhile, from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, nothing. Nary a peep. Perhaps out of concern about upsetting her base? Political considerations must be pushed aside when it comes to addressing racism and bigotry in this nation.
