The iconic animated sci-fi series “The Jetsons” will return as a live-action pilot and potential series.

ABC and Warner Bros. Television each confirmed to Newsday on Aug. 17 that the network has ordered the pilot from Warner Bros. Television and executive producers including Robert Zemeckis, the Oscar-winning director of “Forrest Gump,” the “Back to the Future” trilogy and other films. Gary Janetti, a writer-producer for series including “Family Guy” and “Will & Grace,” will write the pilot.

The news was first reported by TVLine.com in June but did not receive widespread attention or was confirmed until now.

The animated Hanna-Barbera series “The Jetsons,” a satire of 1960s suburbia set in the flying-car future of 2062, ran on ABC prime time during the 1962-63 season. Its 24 episodes became a much-rerun staple of Saturday-morning TV, with 41 new episodes produced for syndication in 1985 and another 10 in 1987.

The franchise also includes the TV movies “The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones” (1987) and “Rockin’ with Judy Jetson” (1988), the animated feature “Jetsons: The Movie” (1990) and this year’s direct-to-video film “The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!”
