Letter: Herrera Beutler on wrong side

By Jeannette Chavez, VANCOUVER

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s recent vote on tax cuts has done a great disservice to the residents of Southwest Washington. She has said in the past that Medicaid is a safety net and should be available to the most vulnerable, yet she voted for this tax cut that has tremendous cuts in this safety-net program.

Additionally, as the Congressional Budget Office has affirmed, this tax cut would greatly hurt those earning between $10,000 and $75,000, and the cuts to Medicare would be immediate and devastating to those of us who rely on this program, which we have paid into throughout our working lives. And what about property taxes and school loan interest? These are tax deductions that help homeowners and students who struggle under the burden of student debt. She has done absolutely nothing to help her constituents and seems to be proud of her vote!

When will Herrera Beutler put those that elected her above party and those that feed her financial coffers? And what about doing her job and holding a town hall? Isn’t that why she was elected? To represent her constituents in Southwest Washington? She has nothing to be proud of, and we will remember her allegiances in 2018.
