Letter: GOP doesn’t care about you

If anyone had doubts about which party is looking out for the interests of working people, the House Republican tax plan should put those questions to rest. This bill, supported by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, is nothing less than class warfare on average people for the benefit of the very wealthy. It will slash the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, repeal the alternative minimum tax (which made sure the wealthy paid something) and the estate tax, and these together will cost the U.S. Treasury over $1.5 trillion, and all of these are permanent.

Worse, it’s blatantly unfair. Workers can’t deduct the cost of moving; businesses can. Companies can deduct the cost of equipment; teachers who buy supplies for students can’t, nor could college graduates deduct interest on tuition; nor would medical expenses be deductible, and the personal exemption, benefiting millions of the middle class, would be eliminated while the maximum size of the mortgage deduction will be halved.

This bill adds $1.5 trillion to our national debt, imperiling Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. If you have a child in college, or an elderly parent, make arrangements to help them, because Herrera Beutler has shown how little she cares about you.
