Letter: GOP tax plan is appalling

As a fiscal conservative, I am appalled that Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, voted for the Ryan tax plan.

I believe that we need to reform the tax structure of the federal government. We must provide tax relief to the middle class, but we must increase taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year and reduce corporate taxes to a level consistent with the average of the rest of the developed world.

We should leave in place the estate tax, which only affects 0.2 percent of Americans. We should make capital gains and passive taxes the same as regular income taxes. We must also lift the cap for Social Security taxes and make sure that we adjust the spending by the government to not increase the deficit. If all of this is done correctly, we can rebuild American infrastructure.

If done correctly, this can comport with the traditional Republican values of a fiscally responsible budget and with Christian values of support for the less advantaged among us.

The proposed deficits cannot be allowed to be put in place. Where are all the Obama-era deficit hawks?
