Letter: Herrera Beutler betrays voters

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s support of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act is a betrayal of all voters in Washington’s 3rd District. This bill will have a negative impact for the majority of the families and businesses in her district.

Why would a congresswoman who received over 60 percent of the vote in her most recent election vote in favor of a tax bill that would have such a negative effect on the people who entrusted her with their vote? The answer is obvious. She owes a big favor to the corporate lobbyists and special interest groups that have funded her campaign.

Candidates that share a concern for the families and business interests in the 3rd District have a difficult time competing against her because of her support from the other Washington. Washington, D.C., owns Herrera Beutler and their interests are her priority.

In 2018, the citizens of the 3rd District — Republican, Democrat and independent — will have a big decision. I hope their choice will be determined by who they believe has the interest of the citizens of the 3rd District on their mind when they vote. Herrera Beutler has demonstrated by her voting record in Washington, D.C., that her constituents are not her priority.
