A 69-year-old Ariel man died Monday afternoon when he lost control of his pickup truck on an icy road, plunged down an embankment and struck a tree.

The Washington State Patrol identified the motorist as James F. Keavney.

Troopers said the crash occurred about 12:41 p.m. on Highway 503 at milepost 43, eight miles east of Woodland. Keavney was driving a 1994 Ram pickup southbound when he apparently lost control on an icy road.

The cause of the crash was due to driving too fast for conditions, troopers said.
