Three people were hurt Tuesday morning in a crash on a state Highway 502 ramp over Interstate 5 south of Ridgefield.

According to the Washington State Patrol, 29-year-old Nicholas J. Barnes, of Rainier, Ore., was heading east onto Highway 502 at around 7:20 a.m. after exiting Interstate 5.

Vancouver’s Ilene R. Middleton, 49, and Battle Ground’s Emmy M. Hieter, 60, were heading west on Highway 502, crossing over the freeway.

The state patrol said Barnes lost control of his pickup, which slid into the westbound lanes and struck Middleton’s car.

Hieter’s SUV then struck Middleton’s car, the state patrol said.

All three drivers were hurt, but only Middleton and Barnes were hospitalized.

Barnes was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. Middleton’s condition was not available.

The state patrol said Barnes was going too fast for the conditions — it was 29 degrees around that time in Vancouver, according to the National Weather Service — and he was cited for first-degree negligent driving.

The crash totaled Barnes’ pickup, Middleton’s sedan and Hieter’s SUV, troopers said.
