Clark County Fire District 6 will burn a house near the Clark County Fairgrounds for firefighter training Saturday.

The house, at 216 N.E. 164th St., is being demolished at the request of the owner, according to the district.

The training starts at 8 a.m., the district said, and firefighters will finish up that evening.

Firefighters will set then douse a series of fires inside the house for practice. Once the house becomes too damaged to enter safely, firefighters will allow it to burn to the ground.

The district said other firefighters will be stationed around the house, hoses at the ready, to ensure the fire doesn’t get out of hand.

The training exercise will be canceled if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The training burn was originally scheduled for Jan. 28, but was rescheduled after a weather inversion led to poor air quality in the region.

District Fire Training Officer Chris Grant said the house is very small, under 1,000 square feet or so, and volunteers will be practicing their initial attack tactics for house fires. They’ll also talk about some new science on how to better choke out fires.

“It’s managing airflow through a house,” he said.

Anyone with questions about the training fire can contact the district at 360-524-0995.
