Letter: Speak up against travel ban

By Mary Bardness, Camas
Published: February 11, 2017, 6:00am

I am a constituent of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and I am writing to protest the ban on immigrants and refugees entering the United States from certain Muslim countries in the Middle East and Africa (but not from countries where President Trump has business dealings). Stoked by right-wing conspiracy fabricators we are violating our constitution. Herrera Beutler and the Republican Congress has been either quiet or supportive. Neither is acceptable.

This unconstitutional ban is abhorrent, cruel, and dishonest. The likelihood of being killed by a refugee terrorist in the U.S. is 1 in 3.6 billion, per a new Cato Institute report (a conservative think tank, no less).

If Herrera Beutler ever differs from her leader in the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, now is a good time to do so and to let us know.

Republicans in Congress who remain quiet or are supportive of this painful and destructive stunt should realize that history will remember them as cowards and perhaps even liars. I can only hope that there is some voter remorse growing in the country since apparently the Republican Congress is unwilling to check our mad leader.
