Letter: Stand up against abortion

Scott Hewitt’s Feb. 5 story, “Be an ‘upstander’ … not at bystander,” reminds me of the thousands who go to Olympia every year since 1973 to publicly stand up for the millions of legally aborted babies and their mothers who are often pressured into abortion, not allowed to hear their baby’s heartbeat and not informed of local life-affirming pregnancy services.

As usual, this year there were several dozen pro-abortion protesters screaming profanity-laced chants on the Supreme Court steps facing the pro-lifers, including children, standing on the steps of the Legislature where pro-life state legislators encouraged us to support their efforts to shift state support from abortion to health care and to inform parents of minors before abortion.

This year I sat on the steps of the Supreme Court talking with a young man who accepted my invitation: “Are you allowed to talk?” I challenged his group’s use of vulgar words that demean sexual intercourse and demean women, asking would he use such language in front of his own children. This led to a 30-minute conversation about the life issues. Topics we discussed can be found at our Clark County Right to Life website, www.clarkrtl.org, for those interested.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
