Letter: Meaningful Movie at Three Creeks

This month, Meaningful Movies helped to introduce the Clark College Food Summit at their regular event at the Cascade Park Library and a special showing at the Vancouver Community Library on Feb. 2.

“Gaining Ground,” by Portland-based documentarians Elaine Velazquez and Barbara Bernstein, tells the personal stories of farmers making extraordinary efforts to feed their local communities sustainably grown produce and grains.

The documentary interweaves experiences of urban farmer-activists in inner-city Richmond, Calif., a small family farm in rural Oregon converting from being a commodity dairy to chemical-free produce farming, and a 10,000-acre farm in the Willamette Valley transitioning from grass seed to organic grains production. The film personalizes class, gender, race and environmental justice issues by rooting them within the narratives of compelling individuals.

The final showing will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Three Creeks Library in Salmon Creek. There is no admission charge but donations to support the Friends of the Three Creeks Library will be accepted.
