In response to The Washington Post story “Women’s League seeing resurgence” (Feb. 12, The Columbian), I wanted to let you know that the League of Women Voters of Clark County is experiencing our own resurgence of interest.
Men and women who want to work for positive civic engagement have enthusiastically joined this national organization that celebrates its 97th anniversary this month. The local league, formed in the late 1930s, added nine new members last week alone.
Best known for our candidate forums, this league chapter also participates in extensive studies that result in forming consensus around issues at all levels of government. Once a position is developed we work to influence public policy through education and advocacy. One of our 50-year members describes her involvement as being equivalent to a college education in civics. New members are always welcome.
