Weather Eye: Don’t expect much warming

Winter still seems to have a firm grip as March approaches

Winter just doesn’t want to let go, does it? Cold rain, rain/snow mix, all snow at times. Bring on spring!

The foothills around Clark County on Monday were covered with snow. Phil Delaney, who lives above Dole Valley, had 5 to 10 inches of snow on the ground Monday. Jana Klotter, above Camas on Livingston Mountain, had more than 3 inches of snow.

Up north in Puget Sound, areas with any elevation away from the water’s edge had snow Monday. It snowed a good share of the day in Everett, and they even had a thunderstorm with snow. Bellingham remained below freezing all day and had light to moderate snow. It was snowing in the San Juans as well. Our coastal beaches in Washington had a mix of rain and snow and showers of ice pellets.

Highs everywhere were much below normal in the 30s and 40s. I know people in Clark County are getting tired of all this 30-something-degree rain. Today is the last day of the month, and we turn to March for maybe a change to drier and warmer weather.

Don’t count on it, although the month will come in like a lamb of sorts, meaning no big storms but no blue skies and sunshine, either. Unsettled weather will continue all week into the weekend. Looking at forecast models Monday, I didn’t see any day above 50 degrees in the next week or so unless we get an unexpected burst of sunshine. Really?

There was still more than 10 inches of rain for the month in the rain bucket in Vancouver, 10.33 inches as of Monday afternoon. At least the unsettled weather and snow in the mountains is a plus for building the snowpack. Eventually, the weather will change for the better as time moves on.

Perhaps maybe when we “spring forward” with the time in a couple of weeks, the weather will also.

We’ll chat again on probably a rainy day Thursday.
