Portland area could see coldest temperatures in three years

PORTLAND — Area residents won’t see the snow storm that was expected Monday, but they could feel some of the coldest temperatures in three years, according to the National Weather Service. Roads in the southeastern suburbs could be slick with black ice.

The weather forecast predicts low temperatures in the teens Monday, with a high of 32. Temperatures should be in the 20s Tuesday.

There is still a 20 percent chance of snow in the greater Portland metro area Monday, according to the National Weather Service. It could snow as much as 2 inches, with more snow expected east of Interstate 5.

Oregon City, Ore., got 1 to 2 inches of snow Sunday night. Parts of Clackamas County got as much as 6 inches. Canby got between 1 and 2 inches, as did Silverton. Longview Heights reported between 9 and 12 inches of snow.

The snow is likely to melt and freeze due to low temperatures, creating black ice on the roads. Drivers should use caution, advised Colby Neuman, National Weather Service meteorologist in a Facebook Live Video. He said to lay off the brakes and take turns at lower speeds.

“People should be prepared and take it easy,” Neuman said. “All it takes is one patch of black ice.”

Portland’s metropolitan area should not have as much ice, Neuman said. While it snowed in the surrounding suburbs, downtown saw few snowflakes.

Winds are expected to pick up Monday. Gusts could be between 30 to 40 miles per house in East Portland, Gresham and Troutdale.

Forecasts for the rest of the week are uncertain. The Global Forecast System predicted warmer weather and increased humidity, but another model predicted the cold, dry weather could stick around.

If it stays cold, that could mean snow and ice next weekend.

It could snow as early as Wednesday.
