Weather Eye: Expect some mess when nature cleans away all this snow

Despite sunshine each day after our heavy snowfall, we still can’t crack the freezing point with our high temperatures. Vancouver managed only 30 degrees for a high Saturday after a bone-chilling low of just 8 degrees.

The temperatures will be inching upward as our thaw is now on the horizon. Overnight clouds promised a warmer night last night, and we should see highs today breach the freezing point to near 34 degrees. Tonight’s low will be in the 20s, and Monday’s high will be in the mid 30s, and then we are out of the ice box. Hopefully, no freezing rain.

However, with all the snow we’ve had, and moderate to heavy rain forecast for Tuesday through Thursday, things might be a mess. Drainage will be an issue with all the snow and ice along the roadways. After days of sub-freezing temperatures, some folks may experience water leaks as pipes thaw out in their homes.

Yep, Tuesday and Wednesday will be a mess as nature cleans our snow away. We’ll manage to get to 50 degrees or so Tuesday through Thursday, before we cool off toward the weekend. I can only imagine what 50 degrees will feel like.

Vancouver is rearranging the record books, as we have chalked up the fifth-coldest winter so far. The records go back to 1892. Let’s take a look at those top (bottom?) five winters.

These are based on the average mean temperature, where 39.6 degrees is average for the first half of winter, Dec. 1 through Jan. 13. No. 1 is 30.8 degrees in 1978-79; No. 2, 31.3 degrees in 1919-20; No. 3, 33.4 degrees in 1909-10; No. 4, 34.2 degrees in 1990-91; and No. 5 is 34.6 degrees in 2016-17.

We still have the second half of winter to go, so if it’s mild, that rank will slip.
