Letter: Congress should play by the rules

The United States has become exceptional in corruption and unethical behavior. Most of Congress, especially Republicans, have made this an art form. When few were watching, they tried to get rid of the independent ethics board.

When public outrage forced them to drop this, they added this rule: “Records created, generated, or received by the congressional office of a Member … are exclusively the personal property of the individual Member … and such Member … has control over such records.”

This can prevent the public from seeing what they have done in their job. Cabinet confirmation hearings can’t wait for background checks. Democratic voting must be suppressed. Foreign interference in our election process is OK if you are a Republican.

Congress is incapable of fairly managing their internal rules processes and affairs. We need to throw out all the corrupt Republicans and Democrats destroying our country. Maybe we need a separate non-partisan group to administer all congressional rules and processes?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
