EVERETT — The newest member of the Snohomish County Council is 21 years old with a family name familiar in local politics.

The Daily Herald says Nate Nehring is a middle school science teacher and the son of Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring. One of three candidates nominated by the Snohomish County GOP, Nehring won the backing of the four other members of the council on Monday.

Nehring is the youngest person to serve on the council since its inception in 1980.

He replaced Ken Klein, who resigned to take a job under County Executive Dave Somers. He’ll represent a district that includes Marysville, Arlington and Darrington.

To keep his seat, he’ll have to run for a four-year term in November.

The job pays an annual salary of $117,534.
