Roy Schimelpfenig tells us he saw a video that answered his questions concerning biblical creation vis-a-vis the theory of evolution (“God greater than science,” June 29, Our Readers’ Views). Faith, belief in ideas for which there is no evidence, is the basis of religious thought. We would not give biblical testimony greater credence to DNA analysis in a court of law.
Comparing God to science is futile. As the saying goes, they are apples and oranges. Religious beliefs go back to prehistoric times. The variety of ideas is vast. Today’s fashion has been adopted according to a need for conformity and faith.
Science, on the other hand, is a relatively recent invention based on the belief that ideas should be checked by experiments or observation. The idea that the big bang theory has its problems is the strength of science. Scientists seek to expand their understanding by questioning the basis for their knowledge. To find a meaningful question is a joy to the scientific mind. Today’s theories conform to accumulated experience.
Repeatedly, religious zealots have trashed scientific theories for being nonbiblical. They really shouldn’t bother. If humans have a question that is amenable to the scientific method, any attempt for a biblical answer is irrelevant, just as in a court of law.
