A man was hospitalized Saturday after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while driving, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Police were dispatched at about 12:45 a.m. to the corner of Broadway and Fourth Plain Boulevard after the man stopped and asked for help from passers-by, according to Sgt. Tim Martin.

Martin said evidence at the scene supported the man’s statement that the shooting was accidental, though detectives with the Major Crimes Unit were continuing to investigate.

The man was in surgery for his wound as of mid-morning Saturday, Martin said. The man’s name was not released.
