Letter: Protect electrical grid

Some time ago I wrote a letter to the editor about the possibility of our electrical system being shut down nationwide by hackers. I was concerned that most Americans did not realize the possibility. If the system did go down, such things as drinking water services and home and commercial refrigerators would also go down. And if the system were to down for a month or so, most of us could not survive without water and food for that length of time.

Considering the consequences, I urged the powers that be to develop defenses to prevent hackers from destroying our electrical system. It seems that Congress now knows of the problem, per the reports in The Columbian. My request now is for everyone to put pressure on our elected officials to make this issue priority No. 1. Having a perfect medical system or a balanced budget won’t do us much good if we are dead due to thirst and starvation.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
