Vancouver firefighters responded to three simultaneous grass fires burning along state Highway 14 Thursday afternoon.

The fires were reported around 2:50 p.m., and the Vancouver Fire Department dispatched nine vehicles to deal with the fires, which burned on the north side of the highway between Ellsworth and Andresen roads, according to the department.

Firefighters stopped a 250-foot long fire just west of Ellsworth, a 400-foot long strip west of Leiser Road and a fire on the east side of Andresen at Buena Vista Drive.

Firefighters and several neighbors with garden hoses took about 15-20 minutes to get all three fires under control. Traffic was slowed for a time on the highway as smoke billowed and firefighters worked.

The fires are being investigated by the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.

The department reminded people to keep vegetation and grass trimmed, which protects buildings from brush fires by cutting the amount of potential fuel for a fire.
