Letter: Democrats promote general welfare

“We the people” begins the preamble to the Constitution, not “we the rich people.” It states the purpose of our Constitution, “promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty,” etc.

What does anything the current Republicans are doing have to do with this preamble and our Constitution? The secret negotiations to remove the Affordable Care Act further highlight the hypocrisy of the Republican Party.

This multibillion-dollar tax cut to those who don’t need it, on the backs of the poor, sick, indigent is a national and human moral disgrace. The constant barrage of right-wing talking points — “ACA is disastrous,” military has been gutted, corporate taxes too high — reflect not only lies but a lack of effort to “promote the general welfare,” lack of concern for Americans, and a greed rampant among the rich.

The divisions among Americans promoted by Republicans — pointing fingers, calling names (takers), government is the problem — are designed to divide because then the rich win. Dysfunctional government benefits Republicans. Democrats gave 25 million Americans needed health care, Republicans gave the rich tax cuts they didn’t need. Who promoted the “general welfare?”
