Clark Public Utilities General Manager Wayne Nelson will start making an extra $10,000 per year, starting July 1.

On Tuesday, the utility’s Board of Commissioners voted to raise Nelson’s annual salary by 3.7 percent from $270,000 to $280,000, following a morning review of his performance.

Additionally, the board approved 100 hours of Nelson’s sick leave be converted to annual leave. His $400 per month car allowance is unchanged.

The commissioners praised Nelson’s leadership and the utility’s performance.

“This utility continues to set the standard across the country for customer satisfaction, safety and reliability, and rate stability,” Jane Van Dyke, Clark PUD board president said in a news release. “Mr. Nelson not only embraces the board’s commitment to these goals, but has created a culture at Clark Public Utilities where all employees are invested in doing what’s right for customers and our community.”

The utility was designated a Diamond level Reliable Public Power Provider, RP3, by the American Public Power Association for providing reliable and safe service. It achieved a perfect score in the evaluation process. In March, Clark PUD distributed a one-time $10 million customer credit after the particularly harsh winter.

It’s also ranked highest by J.D. Power for customer satisfaction among mid-sized utilities for nine consecutive years.

“We recognize that achieving this level of excellence, while maintaining steady rates for six years, doesn’t happen by accident and deserves fair compensation,” Van Dyke said.

Nelson has been Clark’s general manager since 1999.

The utility is publicly owned and supplies power to more than 193,000 customers in Clark County. It also provides water to roughly 34,000 customers in Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek, Lakeshore, Hockinson, Brush Prairie, La Center, Meadow Glade, Amboy and Yacolt.
