Sears to close dozens more stores across the country

Portland – Just months after the aging retailer announced it would close roughly 180 stores, Sears is closing dozens more.

According to various news reports, Sears is closing at least 66 additional stores throughout the nation, including its Kmart stores.

A spokesman for the company wouldn’t say how many stores were slated for closure, but said the Kmart store in Roseburg is the only store in Oregon or Washington included in the latest spate of closures. No Oregon or Southwest Washington stores were included in previous closure lists this year.

The Roseburg store is scheduled to close in early September, the spokesman said. The store will begin its liquidation sale June 15. He declined to say how many employees would lose their jobs.

Sears recently sold its Portland Lloyd Center store to the mall owners as they finish up a $50 million remodel on the center. It’s unclear whether the store will remain at the mall or if its footprint will shrink, but so far, it’s still open.

Sears’ closures comes as traditional retailers struggle to compete with the likes of Amazon and retail upstarts. In the last year, Macy’s has announced dozens of store closures throughout the country, including the historic downtown Portland store. J.C. Penney, Kohl’s and Walmart have also closed stores in recent years.
