Letter: Herrera Beutler sides with banks

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has again chosen big business over everyday consumers. As reported in this paper, she has voted for HR 10, which will repeal key parts of the 2010 Dodd-Frank legislation that was passed to put safeguards in place for our banking system following the 2008 financial crisis.

Herrera Beutler’s vote is in favor of the bankers, the 1 percent, some of the folks that make up Trump’s Cabinet. The bankers want to rid themselves of those pesky regulations so the can return to their reckless and risky behaviors, betting with depositors’ money, without any personal responsibility. Recall that no officials of any banks went to prison after the crisis that took millions of American jobs and millions of American homes.

Herrera Beutler’s vote was to erase much of the good that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau does for consumers. The CFPB’s mission is simple: make sure families don’t get cheated on financial contracts like mortgages and credit cards. So far, the agency has handled more than 1 million complaints and forced banks to return nearly $12 billion that they had scammed from families.

I will not be voting to return Jaime Herrera Beutler to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018. I do not believe she is looking out for my interests.
