Letter: War only creates more chaos

Praying that President Trump will “know there’s no military solution in Afghanistan” hasn’t done what we’ve hoped. But will the Trump plan be supported by the American people?

Trump’s approval rating is falling. Does he not realize that there is a limit to everything? Trump seems to have forgotten that the Russians, after many years fighting in Afghanistan, finally pulled all of their troops and tanks out of there. Negotiation and diplomacy is our only hope there.

The U.S.A., after 16 years of fighting in Afghanistan, has yet to see any victory loosening the power of the Taliban. The president and the Republican Party (or, more likely, the Freedom Caucus of that party) need their hats shrunk a couple of sizes. Don’t they agree there’s a limit to everything? Is more always better?

Before we of the Republican persuasion lose any more friends here and abroad, we need to pray and believe the better way — negotiation and diplomacy. It has broken the evil powers before and will do it again. Trusting and believing is empowering and, so, let’s do it. And our higher blesses the people. War creates more chaos — refugees, poverty and bitterness — and in a dangerous world, it will kill what is left of a hurting democracy.
