Letter: No way to run a country

The June 21 editorial “In Our View: Sick Approach to Health Bill — Senate’s secrecy as it weighs Obamacare replacement no way to run a country,” was brilliant. You hit all the right points with deft insight and balance.

We are witnessing the watering down of democracy as we watch. First, Republicans have dragged their feet in pursuing investigations of an outright attack on the tallest pillar of democracy — free and unfettered elections. Now they are “hiding the ball” when it comes to passing sea-changing legislation. And I read they want to do the same with tax reform. Shame. Shame. Shame.

I’m no fan of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, but she’s dead on when she points out the process we should be using — and which democracy requires: hold hearings, take testimony, get feedback, build coalitions. Perhaps this is the issue which sparks some real independent thinking from our congresswoman.

We are watching the foundations of democracy crumbling all around us. Enough is enough. As your editorial so well stated, it’s time to end the Republicans’ shameful nose-thumbing at the American people.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
