This weekend is the annual Recycled Arts Festival taking place in Esther Short Park. If you visit the Festival and come away inspired to create your own recycled art, why not plan a visit to the library and pick up a few books to help boost that inspiration? There are many ways to be creative and many ways to recycle, so why not combine the two and turn yourself into a found-objects artist?

From bottle caps to old flip-flops, cardboard tubes to salvaged plywood, people are creating everything from accessories to furniture to art – all from found/recycled/salvaged material. And I like to think that gathering information from library materials in order to create something from repurposed items is its own form of recycling. After all, a library book (or DVD, eBook, audio book, magazine, etc.) can be used multiple times by multiple people. How awesome is that?

Get your “repurposer” on with the help of your local library. Peruse the following reading list, see if anything tickles your inner recycler, then take off from there. I’ve included a children’s title “The Soda Bottle School” not only because it’s important for the next generation to know the value of recycling, it’s an inspiring and amazing story of community and ingenuity that all generations can appreciate.

Enjoy the weekend, do a bit of reading, and prepare to upcycle to your heart’s content.
