YAKIMA – A woman was killed and State Route 24 eastbound was closed for a few hours at University Way due to a collision near Birchfield Road Sunday morning.

The collision occurred on SR 24 eastbound at the intersection with Birchfield Road involving a car and a truck. The driver of the car was killed and the truck driver, who was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected in the collision, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to authorities.

Sgt. Trent Clasen of Washington State Patrol said the woman driving the car was speeding on Interstate 82 around 7:15 a.m. When authorities tried to pull her over, she drove off, reaching speeds that topped 100 mph. Her name and age, where the pursuit began and which agencies were involved were not immediately available.

The woman turned onto Terrace Heights Way and authorities ended the pursuit at that point as she continued to flee. Shortly after the pursuit ended, the woman ran a red light at SR 24 and Birchfield and collided with the truck, they said.
