Letter: Leaving fireworks behind

By Jim Armstrong, VANCOUVER

Once again the annual migration of wayfaring vagabonds dealing in the commerce of noise and pollution reminds me that it’s time for my annual “I hate fireworks” cathartic letter to the editor. I continue to be amazed by Clark County’s lowbrow infatuation with things that go boom. But I suppose that behavior is consistent with the desire to develop every square inch of land. Green space, who needs it — build, build, they say!

On the other hand, the two weeks of noise and mayhem of July Fourth provides me with a great excuse to travel and spend my discretionary dollars in a fireworks-free zone. Yes, I know, the patented facile response is “leave if you don’t like it.” Fair enough. I look forward to the day I retire and wave goodbye to Clark County. I wonder, though — if fireworks were sold only in Portland, would Clark County have replaced the Interstate 5 Bridge long ago.
